- Full title :Beyond the meme : development and structure in cultural evolution / Alan C. Love and William C. Wimsatt, editors.
Summary
"This volume consists of 13 chapters that move beyond meme-based approaches to cultural evolution and explore the impact of societal structures and their interactions in various elements of culture, such as spoken and written language, the institutional structure and interest groups of science, the evolution and descent relations of technology as reflected in patents, the cumulative effects of lithic technology, religion, and the costs and adaptations required when adopting new technologies that challenge existing practices. Philosophy, sociology, and other scholars from the US and Europe discuss the conceptual geography of cultural evolution; dimensions of scientific and technological change, including organizations for managing biological data and research, the development of interdisciplinary investigations in bioengineering, and how prior theory and mathematical methods can scaffold and structure the development of new theory; different models of cultural processes and systematic perspectives in the study of cultural change, including heredity and cultural and technological systems and the evolution of coordinated irrigation practices to manage limited water resources and pests; and diverse methodological problems and structural factors related to the reproduction of skills and the transmission of knowledge, including the materiality of cultural transmission, the evolution of language as technology, the origins of writing in early Mesopotamia, the role of scaffolding in changes that accompany the adoption of new technologies, the function of social identity in facilitating cooperative group formation, and wicked systems."--Provided by publisher.
