Summary

When machine vision first became an area of study distinct from pattern classification, in the late 1960s, researchers discovered the power of perspective geometry for recovering 3D shape information from 2D image data. Thus began the major trend in machine vision research and application, which in the mid-1980s led to the adoption of the term "physics-based vision" as differential geometry, photometric stereo, models of reflection and color theory, inexpensive cameras and digitizers all made their impacts on the field. This collection was produced to capture the collective wisdom of the research community. The papers presented herein have passed some test of time, and hopefully present a state-of-the-art snapshot of this moment in the progress of the field, while possibly pointing future researchers in undreamt of directions.
