"This is the first volume to appear in the series within the Collected Works of Erasmus (CWE) which is to be devoted to the New Testament scholarship of Erasmus, and it may be useful therefore to indicate the shape the series will assume. For this series, Erasmus' New Testament scholarship is defined as the 'Paraphrases on the New Testament', the 'Annotations on the New Testament', and those prefatory pieces, including the important 'Ratio verae theologiae'. Thereafter the arrangement of the series will be determined in general by the chronological order in which Erasmus originally published the Paraphrases and Annotations. It is for this reason that the Editorial Board has changed the earlier plan (CWE 23 xvi) of publishing the Paraphrases and Annotations together ... Consequently, the series will be arranged in a sequence in which the Paraphrases will follow the introductory volume of prefatory writings, and the Annotations succeed the Paraphrases ... The 'Paraphrase on Romans', first of the Paraphrases to be published, therefore stands first in the present sequence ... While the introductory volume in this series will contain a general essay on the New Testament scholarship of Erasmus, the first volume of the Paraphrases offers the reader discussions designed to facilitare orientation to the materials."--Preface, New Testament scholarship, v. 2 (CWE, v. 42)
