"Respiratory therapists, also known as Respiratory Care Practitioners, play an integral role in the care of patients with cardiopulmonary disorders such as: Asthma, Emphysema, Bronchitis, & Lung Cancer. Respiratory therapists evaluate and treat all types of patients, ranging from premature infants whose lungs are not fully developed to elderly people whose lungs are diseased. Respiratory therapists provide temporary relief to patients with chronic asthma or emphysema, as well as emergency care to patients who are victims of a heart attack, stroke, drowning, smoke inhalation and/or severe burns, or shock. RTs work under the supervision of a physician to provide many therapeutic and diagnostic procedures and make recommendations based on these responses. They must also communicate with other members of the health care team, such as nurses and doctors, in order to follow the progress of patients and make the modifications to treatments as necessary"--
