- Full title :Sequences, combinations, limits / S.I. Gelfand [and others] ; translated and adapted from the Russian by Leslie Cohn and Joan Teller.
Summary
The third in an educational series of mathematics texts (see above for details of the other two volumes), this book represents a departure from traditional teaching methods. The authors focus more closely on theory than computations, relying heavily on the independent work of readers. Also, it differs in its choice of material, presenting aspects of high-school mathematics that promise to prove particularly useful for future studies and work. The first of three chapters deals with sequences, their definitions and methods of mathematic induction. The next chapter addresses combinations, and the final chapter examines limits, with a series of introductory problems, problems related to the definition of limit, and problems related to the computation of limits. As in the first volume of this series, "road signs" appear in the margins to alert students to passages requiring particular attention, and answers and hints to the test problems are provided.
