- Full title :Statistics for social justice : a structural perspective / by Adje van de Sande & Christie Byvelds.
Summary
"For the last several decades, social work curricula have included research as a required course both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The few social work texts on statistics that exist are written from a mainstream perspective and do not challenge the current neo-liberal social order. These texts emphasize the importance of research being objective and value free. As is the case with the book, Research for Social Justice: A Community-Based Approach (van de Sande & Schwartz, 2011), in this book we take the position that social work research, including statistics, should be taught from a structural perspective and follow anti-oppressive principles. This perspective views the problems experienced by people as rooted in the social, political, and economic structures of society. Donna Baines (2011) in her book entitled Doing Anti-Oppressive Practice states that "Social work is not a neutral, caring profession, but an active political process" (p. 5). Just as the social work profession is committed to social justice and social change, so too should be the aim of social work research."--
