This volume focuses on the fields of cancer immunology and cancer immunotherapy. It looks at the important role of immunity throughout the entire cancer cycle - from unresolved inflammation promoting cellular transformation, to the roles of innate and adaptive immunity in the cancer immunoediting process that both protects the host against cancer outgrowth and shapes cancer immunogenicity, to the observation that cancer can co-opt the complex machinery that evolved to prevent autoimmunity and u…

Summary

This volume focuses on the fields of cancer immunology and cancer immunotherapy. It looks at the important role of immunity throughout the entire cancer cycle - from unresolved inflammation promoting cellular transformation, to the roles of innate and adaptive immunity in the cancer immunoediting process that both protects the host against cancer outgrowth and shapes cancer immunogenicity, to the observation that cancer can co-opt the complex machinery that evolved to prevent autoimmunity and use it to its own advantage by inducing, in otherwise immunocompetent hosts, a state of tumour-specific immune unresponsiveness that favors cancer expansion over cancer patient survival. Thus the field has undergone a major paradigm shift in its thinking about the interaction of the immune system with developing and established tumors. The immune system is seen as a key player in the complex interactions that lead to the fate decisions of cancer development and cancer control. The stage is set for a generation of novel and effective cancer immunotherapies that in some cases can promote extraordinary, durable responses in cancer patients that have never been seen before. Cancer immunotherapy has become a reality and to many has become the fourth pillar of cancer therapy (together with surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy). There are many critical questions remaining about cancer immunotherapy and finding answers to these is explored in this thematic volume.
