Summary

The actions of antisocial student organizations or "cults" have become problematic for students, educators, parents, and the general public in Nigeria. Many university communities have erupted with violence due to these organizations. This survey design study addressed safety concerns, levels of fear, experiences, and perceptions of Nigerian university students regarding these organizations. It was based on the Langone's theory that negative experiences can influence some youths to become susceptible to psychological manipulation and antisocial behavior, known as brainwashing, mind control, coercive persuasion, or thought reform. Responses of 160 participants were collected using a 39 item questionnaire. Descriptive statistics revealed that antisocial student organizations were prevalent on the college campus, a majority of both female and male students had not witnessed violence on the campus, and safety was a major concern for students. Gender differences in responses to levels of fear were conducted using Analysis of Variance which showed significant gender differences for only 2 items in which the level of fear was higher for female students than it was for male students. Gender, residence, and year in college differences were small, and students reported most concerns about safety during nighttime activities. Students' needs can be addressed by introducing a department of student affairs in colleges to provide them with counseling and other services. The research findings can be used by Nigerian students, educators, and the general public to advocate for increased safety and support for university students, and for the control of cult violence by Nigerian leaders.
