Summary

The purpose of this dissertation is to catalog the personal names, place names, and divine names which are found in the published Tell el-Amarna cuneiform texts. Chapter One examines the concept of the proper name, surveys studies on this subject, and suggests the importance of their conclusions for a study of the Amarna names. It compares an Amarna Name study with published Ancient Near Eastern Name studies, and concludes with a survey of previous Amarna Name studies. Chapter Two outlines the procedure followed in the construction of the name catalogs and glossaries. Chapter Three treats each personal name found in the Amarna texts. All attested spellings and occurrences are cited--including where the name appears, how much of each name appears in the original tablet, and any other textual matters. Titles, epithets, kinship affiliations, and the significance of the name bearer may also be considered. The etymology of each personal name is also examined. Chapters Four and Five systematize the grammatical and lexical information obtained from a study of the personal names. This includes a brief consideration of Semitic grammar and glossaries for each of the languages represented in the personal name elements. Chapters Six and Seven catalog the divine names and geographic names. They follow the format of Chapter Three, with the exception that etymologies are not studied. Indices and a bibliography conclude the study.
