Summary

The purpose of this study was to determine which sheltered instruction observation protocol (SIOP) model strategies best meet the needs of Arab English language learners (ELLs). Additional research was necessary to determine necessary modifications when using the SIOP model with Arab ELLs. The main research question for this study was: Which SIOP model strategies are best designed to meet the needs of Arab ELLs? The researcher employed a qualitative methodology in this study, gathering data through classroom observation and one-to-one semistructured interviews. The target population of this study was Arab ELL secondary school teachers. The sample consisted of five participants with varying levels of teaching experience. The data analysis process included the transcription of tape-recorded interviews. Participant responses to each semistructured interview question were segmented for analysis because the researcher was interested in discovering regularities, connections, and patterns. Findings from this study revealed valuable teacher insights regarding working with Arab ELLs and using the SIOP model. The following themes emerged from the data analysis: Arab ELL challenges (such as transitioning from one language to another, using language-specific words, and lacking fundamental conversational and language skills), strengths and weaknesses of Arab ELLs (such as collaboration and social skills), advantages and disadvantages of using the SIOP model with Arab ELLs (advantages included self-paced learning; disadvantages included difficulty identifying areas that needed more review), and effective learning strategies (such as peer interaction, modeling, and group learning). The findings of this research confirm the findings of previous research on this topic. The data generated by this study may be valuable in determining the effectiveness of the SIOP model with Arab ELLs in various school settings. Recommendations for future research include exploring the effectiveness of the SIOP model with Arab ELLs in other types of schools such as private and online schools.
