Summary

Biblical Hebrew is a language which requires agreement in gender between a noun and those parts of speech with which it is construed. The biblical text is, however, replete with passages (over 650) in which this rule is apparently broken. These passages are the focus of this study. After a consideration of the limitations imposed by the long process of transmission of the biblical text, a detailed statement of the method employed in this study is given. The problems of gender disagreement, double gender, and the possible stylistic use of gender are analyzed in detail and discussed. An annotated list of all passages in which there are gender problems is appended.
