Summary
This thesis project details the critical role Gullah Geechee voice plays in the interpretation and preservation of Gullah Geechee culture. The thesis essay reveals that the voices of Gullah Geechee community members are often overshadowed by the voices of noncommunity members. This historic and contemporary insider/outsider dichotomy impacts Gullah Geechee community members in a variety of ways. Two of these are land ownership and economic viability. The essay illustrates the legacy of outsiders’ pervasive presence in Gullah Geechee communities, which in many cases is ongoing. In particular, the essay documents two case studies: the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor at the macro level and the development of the Sapelo Voices exhibit at the micro level.
