Summary
The unconscious still remains a mysterious quality of human nature. The exhibition Irrepressible Arcana explores this mystery. The drawings are primarily influenced by Freud’s tripartite model of the mind and its functions as it expresses itself through dreams. The work explores the relation between the libido and external power structures used to control individuals’ sexuality. According to Freud, dreams are a means for the unconscious mind to express the latent content which it contains. Sexual content is often repressed by societal factors, causing a buildup of this latent content that must be expressed. The exhibition is a visual representation of the latent content that many of us may share within our unconscious as a result of society’s rules and prohibitions.
