Summary

The modern urban family is living a tough complicated life. There is the hullabaloo of our everyday existence and we end the day with exhausted sleep. There is a constant struggle to find a moment's mental rest and find an opportunity to reflect on the deeper aspects of life, deeper questions such as those which concern the future of the planet, the future of the coming generations and the meaning of life. Research for this project included cultural and religious practices throughout the world with a focus on the most populous religions that led to the potential solutions. Parallely, many people who do not align with any belief system also practice in meditative aspects. A design research methodology, and culturally sensitive design materials and features we used to address the problem and arrive at a utilitarian reflective object. Finding both a time and space at which to pause and reflect is a problem faced by many in our modern world. An object that exists at the junction of the self and the world, as our anchors to life and self. This thesis hopes to capture a moment in time, a diversion from the routine, an action, in the spiritual journey of an individual for the future, by creating a totemic object for home use, with a focus on different cultures and sustainable practices.
