Summary

Puthen pana (New Epic Poem) in Malayalam, a Christian music genre of India, is an example of the syncretic music style that is the offshoot of religio-cultural communication at multiple levels and of the interface between the evangelization processes and the personal mission of the composer, John Earnest Hanxleden (1681-1732). The analysis of music examples collected from Kerala, India and the diasporic Indian Christian community in the New York city shows that the family history and personal music experiences of performers are among the factors that account for variations in individual interpretations.
