Summary
Re-veiling has been a medium for women to express their commitment to so-called "traditional" and Islamic values while simultaneously expressing their discontent with Westernization. In this paper I will argue that the re-veiling movements which began in the last quarter of the 20 th century were novel in both the style of veils being worn and the political meanings which were embedded in the practice. In order to explicate this argument, this paper will focus specifically on the re-veiling movements which took place in Egypt, Iran, Algeria, and Palestine. These countries diverge greatly in terms of history and culture, yet re-veiling movements have sprung up in each in response to many of the same sociopolitical events and based on similar ideologies. Examination of the re-veiling movements in these four case studies will demonstrate the scope and commonalities of the anti-Western ideologies which became widespread in the Middle East.
