Summary

This thesis surveys, critiques, and synthesizes recent efforts to develop and define jus post bellum criteria. More than merely a set of post-conflict tactics, post bellum guidance delineates moral obligations imposed upon, at a minimum, parties to conflict. Furthermore, jus post bellum provides overarching principles to direct post-war operations toward a just and lasting peace. This thesis also includes an overview of the historical development of jus ad bellum and jus in bello principles. Not only do jus ad bellum and jus in bello precepts relate to jus post bellum , they are integral to Just War Theory proper. Finally, any contemporary conversation concerning Just War Theory begs reflection upon our current conflict, and commitments, within Iraq. This thesis, by means of a post-script, considers Iraq in light of Just War criteria, both old and new.
