Summary
String Quartet No. I is a five-movement work inspired by my travels to Cappadocia, a region in central Turkey known for its unusual landscapes. In the summer of 2012 I attended a music festival located in Mustafapasha, a small village in the heart of Cappadocia. I was amazed by the dramatic alien-like landscapes carved out of the volcanic plateau by eons of erosion. Early human inhabitants carved dwellings out of the soft rock resembling giant termite mounds. Early Christians continued the practice of carving dwellings as well as churches out of the rocks. It is in this region of Turkey that the Christian Monastic movement was born. There is a combination of isolation and spirituality that permeates the landscape and it is this mood that I tried to capture in my string quartet.
