Tom Jones is a funny, scandalous and picaresque tale of a young lad, reared by a magnanimous benefactor who becomes entangled in the life of an amorous 'lady'. Tom really loves Sophia but finds it hard to gain the happiness he desires through misadventure.
Describes the foundling, Tom, who grows to be athletic, charismatic, generous, and filled with "the glorious lust of doing good" but with a tendency toward dissolution. He leaves home to seek his fortune and his real identity.
