Extreme ultraviolet and X-ray photons from the Sun generate a partially ionized region in the atmosphere of a planet called an ionosphere. Solar activity, including solar flares, coronal mass ejections, and changes in the ionizing irradiance affect planetary ionospheres on short…

The dynamics of the Earth's magnetosphere is strongly influenced by the solar wind. Sudden changes in the solar wind such as dynamic pressure pulses or interplanetary shocks impacting the magnetosphere are ideal for the study of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) wave energy transfer fr…
For sixty years, a Northwest Arkansas family has dominated the world of general aviation by drawing upon its wealth of expertise, innovation and exceptional talent. Jim Younkin, an electrical engineer, invented an autopilot series that revolutionized the industry. His son, Bobby…
Metal abundance measurements throughout the cosmic ages track the history of galaxy formation and evolution. Measuring abundances during the first ~1 billion years is especially important, as they are influenced by the nucleosynthetic signatures from the early stars. Evolution o…
Aquatic and terrestrial animals, from single-celled organisms to human beings, enhance their survival by sending, receiving, and interpreting chemical cues (odors) within their fluid environment. Chemical perception – olfaction – enables communication between individuals, mating…
Echinoidea constitutes one of five major clades of living echinoderms, marine animals uniquely characterized by a pentaradial symmetry. Approximately 1,000 living and 10,000 extinct species have been described, including many commonly known as sea urchins, heart urchins and sand…
Semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and n-alkanes are emitted from various incomplete combustion processes such as low quality fossil fuel, biomass burning, residential heating, ships, and aircraft. The study of semi-volatile o…
Maales…
Intensive animal agriculture is an important part of North Carolina’s economy. About ~ 10 million hogs, and about 1 billion chickens and turkeys are produced annually at animal feeding operations, located primarily in the eastern part of the state. Large emissions of ammonia (NH…
The research presented herein provides valuable information on the physical and chemical characteristics of ambient PM number and mass under different atmospheric conditions, provides insight into their sources, and finally, offers a novel approach for high time-resolution measu…
This research examines how air pollution and climate change influence human capital accumulation in a developing-country context and also studies the effects of policies targeted to keep children in school in face of whatever factors deter them from developing their human capita…
Dissolved oxygen is an important parameter of water quality in aquaculture. Aeration has been known to improve oxygen levels and yields, but its use is uncommon in many developing world environments due to high costs. As a more effective implementation, this thesis presents the …
The decisions made by petroleum producers in the world oil market are both dynamic and strategic, and are thus best modeled as a dynamic game. In the first chapter of my dissertation, I review the literature on the world oil market and discuss my research on econometric modeling…
