Aluminium is the third most abundant element in the lithosphere and yet no biological function has been elucidated. The ubiquity and pH-dependent chemical speciation of aluminium provides multiple routes of exposure to organisms, inducing neurotoxicity, tissue necrosis and organ…

Use of welded titanium alloy to aluminium alloy structures in the aerospace industry has a number of potential benefits for both cost and weight saving by enabling titanium to be used only in the most critical parts, with the cheaper and lighter aluminum alloy making up the rest…
Aluminum based reactive nanomaterials have extensive applications in many fields including solid propellants, pyrotechnics, and catalytic reactions. One recent example is the novel concept of using nanostructured energetic particles for energy storage where the controlled exothe…
Sacrificial metallic coatings have been used in the past, for protecting steel in industrial and urban developments. It has been suggested that thermally sprayed aluminium coatings, immersed in marine environments, are also capable of protecting steel by providing galvanic prote…
Friction joining techniques, such as Friction Stir Spot Welding (FSSW) and high power Ultrasonic Welding (USW), could offer a solution for joining dissimilar materials combinations, such as aluminium (Al) to magnesium (Mg), where high intermetallic reaction rates make the use of…
The growth of barrier-type anodic alumina films formed by anodizing relatively rough substrates has been shown to proceed by high field ionic conduction. As a result of the ionic transport and the induced plasticity, smoothing of the oxide surfaces and the metal/oxide interfaces…
This thesis describes, in a manufacturing context, the development of new waterbased core technology for light alloys. Cores used for steel casting are made from fused silica and are removed using hot sodium hydroxide under refluxing (pressurising hot acids). However, aluminium …
