Throughout human history, innovation has always met society's needs. In most recent decades, the human population has turned its attention indoors, where people spend almost 90% of their time, over half of which is spent looking at a screen. During this time spent inside, the on…

Spin-based electronics seek to utilize the properties of electron spin in order to develop next-generation devices with novel functionalities and applications. As with conventional electronics, semiconductors play a critical role in spintronics by allowing for the active manipul…
We present the Coma Cluster Core Project (C3PO), a deep, high resolution and contiguous mosaic survey of the inner ⇡ 150 squarearc minutes of the core of the Coma Cluster. The region was tiledby 21 HST/WFC3 pointing and was observed in F336W from the UVIS channel, and F160W from…
This work documents processes of rhyolitic and mixed rhyolitic-basaltic magmatism and volcanism at Krafla central volcano, northeast Iceland, from two perspectives: 1) field studies of the mixed basalt-rhyolite Halarauður eruption associated with major caldera collapse at ca. 11…
Increase in public awareness of the immediate effects of concussions has fueled researchers to better understand the injury from both a clinical and physiological standpoint in hopes to improve preventative and rehabilitation practices. However, there is very little information …
We investigated the electronic structure of the two nematic materials Sr₃Ru₂O₇ and Ca(Fe₀.₉₇Co₀.₀₃As)₂ using spectroscopic – imaging scanning tunneling microscopy (SI-STM) and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). – – – Sr₃Ru₂O₇ is an itinerant metamagnet that shows…
The Earth is rotating around its rotation axis in an irregular manner. The Earth rotation axis and its orientation in space vary with respect to the reference system (both the terrestrial and the celestial) due to the wide range of processes that contribute to the rotation excit…
There is evidence that a stably stratified layer of fluid, which is not penetrated by the convective flow of fluid in the bulk of the outer core, is located below the Core-Mantle Boundary (CMB). The question considered in this thesis is whether such a layer also affects the core…
The Galactic bulge is one of the most intriguing places to study because of its large concentration of old stars, so its study leads us to understand how the formation of the Galaxy was. In our efforts to reconstruct the star formation history of the Milky Way, the study of the …
An important analysis in fluorescence spectroscopy is molecular dynamics, in particular, quantification of diffusion coefficient. In this research, we apply a convolutional neural network (CNN) to determine the diffusion coefficient of freely diffusing molecules. We construct th…
Covering the energy demand by using environmentally friendly resources is a major challenge of the present. Gas turbines take a central role in accomplishing this objective, as they allow for bridging periods of a deficit in available renewable energy sources. The application of…
