Summary
The aim of the study was to investigate the issues of students with learning disabilities in Cyprus regarding their identification, accommodations, and friendships, through a parental perspective. The research was conducted using mixed methodology from two data sources. Eighty-eight parents of children with learning disabilities responded to a questionnaire. I also interviewed two teenagers with learning disabilities and their mothers. The results indicate that the majority of the parents used private identification for their children. A large proportion of identified students did not receive any accommodations inside their schools, but the majority of students received private tutoring. There was limited information provided on the student friendships. The parental reliance on private services both for identification and private tutoring raises questions regarding the availability and effectiveness of public identification services and school practices in Cyprus.
