Non-native plant pests and pathogens threaten biodiversity, ecosystem function, food security, and economic livelihoods. Preventing, minimizing, and mitigating damage from invasive non-native plant pests involve dynamic, multiscale strategies that are agile enough to respond to …
Turkeys have to overcome several challenges early in life, including exposure to pathogens and difficulty with the transition from yolk as a nutrient source to CHO dietary sources. Probiotics are thought to help alleviate these symptoms in the post-hatch poult, but any beneficia…
Modern political, social and economic forces are creating new contexts for human-nonhuman primate interaction, creating the possibility of cross-species pathogen transmission. This “hybrid” dissertation examines three facets of cross-species pathogen transmission on the Indonesi…
The research in this manuscript highlights new and improved methods to concentrate pathogens from a complex food matrix and detect them via PCR. These contributions to the science of rapid pathogen detection are unique in that they are designed to measure the efficacy of the con…
Objective of this study was to evaluate effect of UV-C radiation (0, 1.16 and 3.21 kJ/cm2), pomegranate (Punica granatum) seed essential oil (PGEO) and lemon (Citrus lemonum) plant essential oil (CLEO) on decontamination of Candida albicans, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcu…
Surface water contamination has been a global concern for years, especially in the developing world where high-quality centralized water treatment systems are often lacking. An alternative point-of-use household water treatment technology widely adopted in many developing countr…
The Somatology industry as a discipline involves close body contact, where the risk exists between the client and the therapist, as well as between clients. It is expected that in these personal treatments a good standard of hygiene and cleanliness of surfaces, implements, as we…
Blood is a critically important human tissue, and for over a century, blood transfusions have saved the lives of countless patients. However, blood is often in short supply, and the cost of screening donated blood for immune compatibility and an ever-increasing number of blood-b…
Herbivory by wild and domestic ungulates influences tree recruitment and alters plant community composition in forests throughout the world. Herbivore-driven declines in tree recruitment have been widely observed for quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides), a foundation tree species…
Flavobacteriia is the largest class within the phylum Bacteroidetes. Members of Flavobacteriia (frequently written as “flavobacteria”) thrive in a broad range of marine and non-marine ecological niches. Besides, a large proportion of flavobacteria are known as animal pathogens, …
The field of plant natural product (NP) discovery has changed substantially since the isolation of morphine from opium poppy in 1806. The largest of these changes came in the last decade with the integration of computational genomics into the field, which resulted in the develop…

Since the dawn of time, multicellular life has been exposed to a wide range of microbes. A share of them will not interfere with the host development or daily homeostasis, some might even contribute to it and potentially become essential, such as gut microbiota. However, a small…
Atherosclerosis, the forerunner of cardiovascular diseases, is regarded as the main cause of mortality, with an age-related rise in prevalence. It is defined as a chronic immune-mediated inflammatory illness that causes a pathological thickening of arterial walls, obstructing bl…
The South African grassland biome, like a multitude of biomes in the world is facing eminent decline in biodiversity due to ongoing transformation and fragmentation. The rich biodiversity in this biome is causally linked to a variety of important ecosystem services that benefit …
The study was aimed at extracting essential oils from Callistemon citrinus and Cymbopogon citratus, performing extensive characterisation of the extracted oils and investigating their antimicrobial effects against a batch of pathogens. These two plants are commercially known as …
Chemical pesticides have been used to protect crops, trees and environments from infestation and/or damage caused by pests. Although effective, chemical pesticides leads to environmental pollution overtime. Hence eco-friendly alternatives to chemical pesticides were sought for c…
"Sweet cherries are a speciality crop, subject to significant production risk for growers, yet with high potential returns due to strong consumer demand. This book provides comprehensive coverage of the history, genetic improvements, production, physiology of growth and cropping…
